Cosmetic Acupuncture

Do something amazing for your skin!

Thank you for considering Cosmetic Acupuncture as your healthy option for looking and feeling younger.

This wonderful practice has been used for centuries in China by emperors and the wealthy.

It is a relatively non-invasive procedure that brings about amazing results that are more than just skin deep.

It is the only cosmetic procedure that actually improves your health. Although results may not be as visually dramatic as surgical procedures, Cosmetic Acupuncture treats not only the face and neck areas but also addresses the body’s underlining conditions.

Patients leave not only looking younger but feeling rejuvenated and healthier.

What are the benefits?

  • Brighter and tighter skin

  • Evening out of skin tone

  • Reduction in fine lines, redness and acne scarring

  • Facial sculpting and contouring

How does it work?

The Western Standpoint:

Mei Zen Cosmetic Acupuncture works because the needling causes micro-traumas in the skin to which the body responds by increasing blood flow and the production of collagen and elastin for wound healing. The needling, which is done at the level of the dermis, may also stimulate neurotransmitter production.

The Chinese Medicine Perspective:

Qi (energy) and blood are being brought to the face. Qi is being lifted, and the body's energetic systems are being put into balance. Blood and oxygen are flooding the facial skin, promoting plumpness, brightness and giving luster to the texture and colour of the skin.

Is Cosmetic Acupuncture recommended for everyone?

Individuals with the below conditions should be advised of the following precautions or limitations:

  • Botox or facial fillers: Patients must wait a minimum of 6 months after getting Botox or facial fillers before receiving cosmetic acupuncture in that area to minimize the chances of disturbing the site of the fillers.

  • History of chronic migraines and headaches: Because we are bringing a lot of energy and blood to the head, individuals who are prone to headaches or migraines are more susceptible to presenting symptoms when they receive cosmetic acupuncture. However, while this is a possibility, it does not occur for everyone.

  • Seizure disorders: Similar to individuals suffering from chronic headaches and migraines, individuals suffering from seizure disorders must be mindful of the risk of bringing too much energy to the head.

  • Uncontrolled hypertension: This applies to individuals who are diagnosed with high blood pressure but do not take the necessary precautions i.e. prescription medication, to control the symptoms.

  • Blood thinners: Blood thinners may increase the chances of bruising and delay healing time.

**Cosmetic Acupuncture may not show optimal results for individuals who are chronic smokers, drink alcohol on a regular basis, have significant sun damage or do not have some sort of skin care regimen.

Side effects of Cosmetic Acupuncture may include:

While cosmetic acupuncture is much less invasive than many other fillers or cosmetic procedures available today, it is still important to take a moment to consider some of the possible side effects . Three of these are very minor, however, more common. And three are very, very rare but more serious.

Common side effects:

  • Minor bruising

  • Headaches

  • Dizziness

Rare side effects:

  • Allergic reaction: Allergic reactions to needle insertion or skin care oils or lotions. Please be sure to mention any allergies to me at the initial intake to minimize any allergic reactions.

  • Nerve injury and Needle shock: All cosmetic procedures that break the surface of the skin run the potential risk of causing nerve damage or needle shock. Effects may be temporary or longer lasting.

  • While cosmetic acupuncture also falls under this category, it is important to note that the chance of it causing any nerve damage is almost negligible because cosmetic needles are inserted very superficially (only 2mm- 3 mm) into the topmost dermis layer of the skin.

Pre- Treatment Preparation

  • Have a clean, make up free face.

  • Bring your preferred moisturizer and sunscreen protection to be applied after treatment.

  • Wear comfortable loose clothing. Bring loose pants or shorts and a short sleeved top.

  • Reduce taking blood thinners i.e. Aspirin, Tylenol or Vitamin E (if it has not been prescribed by your physician).

  • Take Arnica during the weeks of treatment to help prevent bruising.
